The M4V file extension is a format developed by Apple to securely store videos and films purchased on iTunes. They contain extra protection to prevent the videos from being opened on unauthorised devices.
M4V and MP4 are very similar, as both belong to the MPEG-4 encoding family. However, since M4V is an Apple proprietary format, they have limited compatibility with non-Apple devices. Whereas MP4 is the international standard and works on nearly all devices.
If your M4V file has a protective DRM, it can only be opened on authorised Apple devices. If it doesn’t have a DRM, it can also be opened on Windows systems. Simply double click the file and it will open on your device’s native video player.
